I am grateful to all those who kept things running in my absence! That is particularly true because, in addition to our regular business, we had several special projects going this summer. I think, for example, about the sale of the rectory; the car-park/solar panel project; and the stained glass windows.
But the embarrassing fact is that I enjoy my normal routine enough that I am always kind of relieved to get back into it when the summer winds down. The rhythm of my normal life feeds my soul.
Given my job, my week inevitably revolves around Church more than most. The details of my normal weekly rhythm are not interesting enough to write down. But each day has its own task, all of which point in one way or another to worship on Sunday. That is a wonderful feature of life as a parish priest.
Not everyone enjoys routine as much as I do. But all of us need to find ways to encounter God in the ordinary details of ordinary life. This is not an invitation to guilt!! On the contrary, this is an invitation to deeper life and joy with God. May we all find ways to accept that invitation!
