I am bitter.
It may be that I will come to relish the fact that I watched football history being made. But I seriously doubt it.
But I have to give the devil his due. (I use that metaphor on purpose!) Tom Brady and the Patriots were impressive in the fourth quarter. I don’t mean their play, which was good, although helped by some good luck and some Falcon mistakes. (I acknowledged that I am bitter!!) I mean their heart.
It takes real heart to keep battling even when it seems hopeless.
By the beginning of the 4th quarter, most people, even most professional athletes, would have given up. They would have stayed on the field and put on a decent show. But nothing more. That is what seems to have happened to the Falcons defense by the end. Patriot victory seemed inevitable, and they watched it happen.
But Brady and the boys kept pushing, kept chipping away at the Falcons lead, kept playing the game as if they might actually win. And, of course, they did.
I cannot cheer their victory. But I can and do cheer for any triumph of the human spirit. It was an impressive performance. And much as it pains me to say it, I would love to be a little more like Tom. I would love to have more of that kind of heart.
